Alumni Guest Blog | Yeimy Daza on Toronto-Based Shorts Film Festival

Toronto Based Shorts (TBS) was started by Paul Villenave and Dylan Posgate, a co-director duo who couldn’t find screenings in the city that were Toronto-focused, affordable, and showcased high-quality films. So, they created one – a festival for emerging filmmakers like us.

I met Paul back in 2022 during the first edition of TBS, and when I showed up, I knew I needed to be part of this. The following year, I joined as Festival Director. I mainly focus on securing sponsorships and supporting the main duo, who truly handle the heavy lifting of the festival. Along the way, I’ve built some amazing connections, including partnerships with MUBI Canada and Toronto Film School (TFS).

Having TFS as a sponsor this year feels extra special since I’m an alum. This festival is such a great opportunity for film students. I remember being one of them, hungry to meet filmmakers who were talented and approachable. Back then, I didn’t know where to find those connections, but TBS is that spot now! It’s all about connecting, showcasing your work, and getting recognized by your peers.

Paradise Theatre
This year, we’re excited to announce all-new venues! For the first time, our screening will be held at Paradise Theater

Fast forward to our third year, and it’s clear there’s a big demand for festivals like this. We’re all about affordability and community, while maintaining credibility with our incredible sponsors. But it’s not just about prestige. It’s about creating a space for filmmakers and actors who are still figuring things out – a place where collaborations are born. This year, we had over 200 submissions! Paul and Dylan handle much of the programming and logistics, so huge kudos to them for making it all happen.

And let’s talk about the after-party – it’s just as important as the screenings. Forget the stiff Q&A vibe; this is where you grab a stiff drink, relax, and have real conversations with fellow filmmakers. You might find someone who truly gets the grind of making movies in Toronto and may even be your next collaborator. It’s all about building connections and sharing resources to bring amazing films to life.

Toronto Based Shorts is growing fast. I can’t wait to see it become a bigger festival with more nights, all while sticking to our motto: Network – Keeping it Cheap – Short but Good.

Come hang out, get inspired, and be part of this year’s festival!
