Toronto Film School Joins the Global Game Jam Movement Jan. 23 – 25

Nearly 500 sites and 25,000 participants worldwide are gearing up for the annual Global Game Jam and this year the Toronto Film School will join the movement.

Now in its seventh year, the Global Game Jam is an annual event where game designers and developers all over the world work in teams to create an original video game in just 48 hours—straight.

With venues in major cities world-wide, the Toronto Film School will open the doors of it’s Steeles Campus to students, alumni, and video game industry professionals for the 2015 Toronto Film School Global Game Jam Jan. 23 to 25.

“The Toronto Film School is proud to be a host venue for Global Game Jam 2015,” said Jean-Paul Amore, Associate Director of Education Toronto Film School . “Global Game Jam offers students a great opportunity to get a taste of the industry, while expressing their creativity and developing a game in only 48 hours.”

At this intense, high-energy event, teams of four or five participants will build a game from scratch. All the games will be on a particular theme, which will be announced at the beginning of the event. That topic will be consistent at Game Jam sites across the world.

Ksenia Shutova, a sixth term Video Game Design and Animation student, is one of the organizers of the Toronto Film School Global Game Jam.

“This is a well known event to all game developers: professional, students, indie,” Shutova said. “It also attracts people who are interested in video game design and wanted to be involved in the industry but didn’t have an opportunity.”

As a student, Shutova said there are a number of benefits, not the least, of which is the pride one feels when they complete their game.

“It is a lot of fun and it is a unique opportunity to work as a team in a time limited build,” Shutova said. “You can also assess your skills… and you walk away with a portfolio ready game.”

Even for those who might not have the knowledge of game design and develop to allow them to participate, Shutova said, the game presentations on Sunday would likely be of interest. The presentation of the games will begin at 3:30 p.m. and are open to the public.

“They can see what we do at Toronto Film School,” Shutova said. “And they can talk to students and developers about our experiences.”

Two meals per day will be provided on site. Computers are available, to reserve a computer please select the ticket type that includes a computer.
